The two towers, different in size, draw one’s attention at a first glance of the
Notre-dame-de Chartres cathedral. This is a result of the long building period:
the entrance facade and the right tower originate from the epoch of the early
Gothic. That was just the transition period from the roman round arches to the
Gothic pointed arches. In contrast to this, the left tower was finished 350 year
later. The high-Gothic nave is very wide; its walls are interrupted by big
windows. To prevent collapsing of the wide vault, the walls are supported at the
exterior by buttresses having a very decorative effect as well. For the Anker
model, I built only the western entrance front and part of the nave. The full
cathedral would require box Nr. 34 and many special stones. The backside may be
best kept out of sight. The model looks best when applying the cutout rosette in
the big aperture. One may also put the Gothic window poles in the windows of the
high tower. This may be done best while erecting the building; inserting it at a
later stage may easily cause dislocation of the small stones.
It is recommended to place a piece of thin cardboard (8 × 8 cm) in the left
tower at a height of 15.875. Subsequently the inner part of the following layer
can be filled with stones while building the layer at 17.125 with the isolated
stones Nr. 29 is much easier.
