Large Fortress
(Grosse Festung)
Designed by the Richter Art Department; built by George
Hardy
The original overall plan.
Notice the British flag. One must suspect there was a marketing reason. Is
it a coincidence that the only example was found in London?

1986
I built this version in 1986. The room was narrow, so I had to build the
two ramps to the side entrances as separate structures. Note the flag
-- the flag of the German Empire.

A better look at the structure.

2003
As you can see, the new table top allowed me to build the entire structure
as it should be. The building is five foot square (1.5 × 1.5 meters).
The foot (30 cm) ruler gives an impression of the size of this building.
I built this model as carefully as possible -- no substituted stones,
no changes, exactly as drawn by Richter. (OK, there were two obvious errors
on the plans.)

The corner fortifications. Note that there are both cannon and rifle
firing points.

As a final comment, let me say that this building is very impressive. Not
as impressive as a number of exhibition buildings, but the most impressive
set sold by Richter.
