The Basilica of St.
John the Evangelist
built by AV Ernst Offerman (Haarlem, Netherlands)
The original basilica was built in circa 550. Construction took about 14 years. The church was destroyed by an earthquake at the end of the 14th C. Again Ernst has drawn on site seen during a vacation trip. This first picture shows you what he saw.
From this ruin, Ernst saw the beauty of the original structure, as is shown so clearly below. Anchor builders will recognize many of Ernst's custom stones. They add to the detailed realism of all of his constructions. Thanks to him, we all have been able to see the beauty of many long-lost buildings.
